History and Stained Glass

A Brief History

In 1927, a newly organized congregation called Avondale Methodist Episcopal Church, South, bought some property on the corner of Talbot Avenue and Herschel Street  for $11,000.  After the purchase of a small chapel, the main sanctuary was built in 1941.  In 1947, a Sunday School Building was finished and in 1955, a new education building was erected.  Through long years of struggle and sacrifice, the people of Avondale United Methodist Church have learned that a bold vision of the kingdom can become a present reality through love, sacrifice, and service.  We are thankful for our rich heritage and look forward to a future filled with the promises of God.  2007 is a special year as we celebrate 80 years of Christian ministry as a community of faith.

Stained Glass

Stained glass has long been a tradition in the Christian churches.  Before worshippers were able to read several centuries ago, the stained glass in churches not only evoked a sense of mystery, wonder, and awe as one entered the house of God, but also provided a practical function—the illiterate were able to learn the gospel story not just through hearing but through seeing.  Our beautiful stained glass continues to provide a sense of presence, holiness, and beauty that is becoming increasingly important especially with newer generations for whom the highly visual and aesthetic modes of communication are more meaningful.

In all, there are 14 stained glass windows.  Above the holy table is the beautiful and enveloping “I Am” window.  Upon leaving the sanctuary, one is challenged by the “Great Commission” window to go make of all disciples for Christ.  The other large windows which encircle the worship space begin with the birth of Christ and lead to the pouring out of the Holy Spirit upon the church on the day of Pentecost.  The windows are some of the most beautiful in Jacksonville.
